Can Dogs Eat Froot Loops?

Mar 27, 2023 | Safety

Getting puppy eyes from your dogs every time you fix yourself a bowl of Froot Loops for breakfast? As all of us dog owners know, they always want whatever we’re having! But can you share this colorful cereal with your furry friend, or is it a human-only food? Can dogs eat Froot Loops? Let’s find out!

What is actually in Froot Loops?

As much as the Kellogg’s brand likes to pretend their Froot Loops are a wholesome breakfast choice, this isn’t really the case. Sure, they have some added vitamins and minerals, as well as some whole grains, but this can’t make up for the fact that they’re absolutely laden with sweetener. In fact, almost half of a Froot Loop’s weight is made up of sugar!

Froot Loops also contain other unhealthy ingredients. These include partially hydrogenated vegetable oil (trans fat), and in the US, artificial colorants. There isn’t actually any fruit in these loops, unfortunately, and they can’t be considered healthy by any definition of the word.

Can dogs eat Froot Loops?

The short answer is yes, dogs can eat Froot Loops. This cereal is safe and non-toxic, so if your pooch devoured a bowl while you weren’t looking, there’s no need to worry. It does have to be said that if there was also milk in the bowl, you may have to count on some puking and diarrhea. Nothing dangerous, but dogs are lactose intolerant, so having more than a lick or two of milk can upset their tummies.

Now, although we’ve established your dog is not going to keel over if you give it a few Froot Loops, it’s important to keep in mind that just because they can, doesn’t mean they should. Grains and cereals can be a healthy addition to a dog’s diet, but Froot Loops in particular don’t exactly make the best choice.

As we saw in the section above on what it contains, this colorful cereal is packed with sugar and contains artificial colorings that our furry friends can be sensitive to! Regularly including it in your dog’s meals is just not a good idea. Our pets need more wholesome and nutritious food to thrive and to avoid obesity, digestive problems, and other health issues in the long run. Luckily, you’ve got plenty of options!

Healthier Froot Loop alternatives

We know, we know, it’s difficult to say no to our furry pets! If you want your dog to be able to enjoy breakfast alongside you, there are loads of things you can offer that are a lot healthier than Froot Loops.

While dogs can have a Froot Loop here and there without issue, this colorful cereal is meant for humans, not for our furry friends. If you’d like to share breakfast with your dog, you’re better off giving them something more nutritious.
